Reece James Right-Back Competition
Reece James sits down with Josh Denzel to give his First Impressions since joining the senior squad, as he reveals who is the hardest to face in training, what he thinks of his FIFA 21 stats, his love for tea and the competition for the right-back spot.
After spending the 2018/19 season on loan at Wigan, James made a significant breakthrough under Lampard last season, benefiting from Chelsea’s transfer ban to rival Cesar Azpilicueta for a place in the starting line-up. Lampard’s decision to select a flat back four in his side’s recent victories over Burnley and Sheffield United has forced him into making a tough decision over who to select at right-back, but he has opted for James over the club captain.
The 20-year-old’s attacking qualities are second to none and his partnership with Hakim Ziyech is beginning to blossom, while James also credits the impact of Thiago Silva in helping him to improve the defensive side of his game.
